2011 Dialectical Behaviour Therapy
Core Skills
Workshop
This workshop provides tools and strategies to increase client and therapist motivation, facilitate change in multiple intransigent,
severe disorders, and manage crises and difficult problems that can arise in session (e.g., dissociation, self-harming,
threatening behaviour, attacking the therapist, refusing to speak, etc.). This is a great opportunity to develop,
refine and reinforce proven skills.
Originally extraordinarily successful treating those with Borderline personality disorder,
DBT has proven effective in treating
many mental health issues including depression, anxiety, substance and alcohol abuse,
eating disorders, suicide threats, self harm and anger.
DBT is based on four vitally important core skills . . . . . .
Essential for Health Care Professionals
Psychologists, Social Workers, Doctors, Nurses, Psychiatrists,

This evidence based, hands on, one day workshop
is intended for experienced mental health professionals, whether experienced with DBT or simply
interested in increasing ones range of interventions with difficult-to-treat patients.
Learning
This workshop will provide
you with a practical introduction to the skills that comprise the Dialectical Behaviour Therapy Program designed by Professor Marsha Linehan. The day will be divided into four core modules,
much like the program, covering in order: Mindfulness skills - equipping the client to be more in the moment, focusing on the here and now, in a calm and rational place, Emotion Regulation -
equipping the client to decrease the intensity of and ride out overwhelming emotions without acting on them, Interpersonal Effectiveness - equipping the client with effective communication skills
and how to get their needs met in relationships and Distress Tolerance skills - equipping the client with skills to cope with difficult times when emotions are running high. Each participant will leave the
workshop having a broad understanding of how the DBT package is utilised and possessing some practical exercises for each of the core modules that comprise the program. This workshop is a
wonderful opportunity to practice and develop skills to integrate into your own clinical practice.
Experiential exercises will be included with each skill to reinforce learning. The learning process of this workshop includes audience participation (although not mandatory),
explanation of the treatment stages, role plays, case studies and demonstrations.
