2009 Dialectical Behaviour Therapy
Core Skills Workshop

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is extraordinarily effective in helping people manage overwhelming emotions. DBT has been found to strengthen a person’s ability to handle adversity without losing control or acting destructively (McKay, Wood and Brantley 2007). Originally successful treating those with Borderline personality disorder, DBT has proven effective in treating many mental health issues including depression, anxiety, substance and alcohol abuse, eating disorders, suicide, self harm and anger.
DBT is based on four vitally important core skills . . . . . .

More Infomation

This evidence based, hands on, one day workshop is directed at Health Care Professionals who wish to keep up to date with current trends, and work more effectively with their clients to improve treatment outcome.

Learning
This workshop will focus on the rationale and subsequent use of DBT, the components of DBT, skills development and client benefits. Special emphasis will be on the four core skills of DBT - skills that put the client in control of their choices, emotions and relationships. These four core skills include: Mindfulness – equipping the client to be more in the moment, focusing on the here and now, in a calm and rational place. Focusing less on the painful past experiences and worries about the future. Distress Tolerance – equipping the client with skills to cope with difficult times when emotions are running high, helping clients be in the moment even though they are experiencing overwhelming emotions. Interpersonal effectiveness is an essential DBT skill. Equipping the client with effective communication skills (like learning to say no and dealing with difficult interpersonal situations) and how to get their needs met in relationships. Emotional Regulation – equipping the client to decrease the intensity of and ride out overwhelming emotions without acting on them. This will include a video presentation of Dr. Marsha Linehan teaching the skill 'Opposite to Emotion Action'.

Experiential exercises will be included with each skill to reinforce learning. The learning process of this workshop includes audience participation, explanation of the treatment stages, role plays, case studies and demonstrations.

Facilitator
Diana Priest is the Senior Social Worker at the Missenden Psychiatric Unit, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney. Over the last 5 years Diana has co-ordinated the DBT program at the Unit and regularly holds DBT seminars and workshops. Diana's own DBT development included training at Behavioral Tech, LLC, Seattle, which was founded by Dr. Marsha Linehan (who originally developed DBT). Diana has extensive experience and a wealth of hands on practical and theoretical knowledge to pass on through this workshop . . .
